Nathaniel McCaughey came from Londerderry, Ireland in 1797 and settled in Sadsbury Township of this county. He married Jeannette Stewart, a granddaughter of Walter Stewart who emigrated to Chester County about 1720 and married Margaret Andrew. Walter Steward died in April 1778 and his wife Margaret on September 7, 1748, aged 38. Both are buried in Upper Octorara graveyard.

To Nathaniel and Jeannett Stewart McCaughey were born four children of whom the eldest was Enoch S. McCaughey, born in Sadsbury Township, April 6, 1810. He spent his boyhood days on the farm and was engaged in agricultural pursuits until he was 25. He then entered into the mercantile business, which he continued for 15 years, when he began farming in what is now East Caln Township, being thus engaged some 18 years. For the past 12 years he has been in the mercantile business in Downingtown.
