Methodism in Charlestown
Methodism was introduced into Charlestown (then
known as Hard Scrabble), by Rev. David Best, ca 1830. The first members
were:
- William Umblebee, local preacher and first class-leader
- Mary Umblebee
- Mary Williams and 2 daughters Mary and Rachel
- David and Margaret Coffman
- Silas Gordon and wife
- Joseph and Elizabeth Snyder
- Sarah Black
- Eliza, Isabella and Mary Snyder
- Eliza Funderwhite
- John and Anna Funderwhite
- Joseph and Elizabeth Deve
- Samuel and Rosanna Coffman
- John W. McCurdy and Magdelene his wife
- David B. Patrick
The class met and preaching
held in Wm. Umblebee's house in Charlestown. The church was built in 1840
and had a graveyard connected with it.
